Testing & Prevention
ARCA provides free, rapid, anonymous HIV testing by appointment MON-THURS between 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.. We use the OraQuick Advance test which means no blood is involved and the test takes approximately 20 minutes to perform. The appointment and include pre and post risk reduction counseling and lasts about an hour. Referrals to appropriate agencies are provided if necessary.
ARCA provides free additional lab testing and linkage to care if your result is positive. We double check the preliminary result by providing a confirmatory test and we provide free screening (T-cell count) to see how strong your immune system is.
ARCA also provides FREE syphilis, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia testing to men through our Synergy program. The syphilis test is a blood draw and Chlamydia/gonorrhea requires a urine sample. The results of these tests are available in two weeks. These tests also require an appointment. ARCA does not provide treatment services. We provide referrals to our collaborating agencies for treatment.
When should you get tested?
- If you've EVER had unprotected anal, vaginal, or oral sex.
- If you've ever shared needles.
- If you plan on becoming or are pregnant
- If you've had sex under the influence of drugs
- If you've been sexually assaulted
- If you have had sex with someone who is HIV +
Prevention Research: What's the T? And What's the TAB?
ARCA is one of 3 sites in the US funded by CDC to conduct a safety study of the anti-HIV drug tenofovir in HIV negative men who have sex with men. "The T" is now fully enrolled and actively following participants for two years. ARCA enrolled the highest proportion of men of color of any site (41%) through a targeted effort to reach men who are usually underrepresented in clinical trials. We are very grateful to our Tenofovir Advisory Board "The TAB" for their advice and hard work to make this study a success. The TAB continues to serve as a community advisory board (CAB) for other ARCA programs as well. If you are interested in serving on an ARCA CAB, please let us know!
